The Detroit Tigers lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday 8-3, but they also lost starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez to injury.

The lefty went 3.0 innings but was removed with a spasm in his shoulder blade area. He surrendered five earned runs on five hits and struck out one.

He took the loss, falling to 11-9 this season with a 3.57 ERA.

The following update from manager A.J. Hinch comes from an ESPN.com article on the game:

"He had a spasm, and when we went out there, he was wanting to take a breath," Hinch said after his team's 8-3 loss. "He had a little bit of a hard time settling down. But he wanted to throw a pitch, and then we all saw that pitch, and then we took him out of the game. "So, he'll be reevaluated [Tuesday], and we'll see how he comes out."

While the tests will tell the full story, it's quite possible that Rodriguez has thrown his last pitch of the season - and maybe his last pitch in Detroit.

He signed a five-year deal before the 2022 season in Detroit but has an opt-out after this year. He can take the three years and $49 million to remain in Detroit, or can opt-out and seek a better deal.

The 30-year-old is 80-53 lifetime with a 4.08 ERA. He's in his ninth professional season (missed all of 2020 COVID season) with the Red Sox and Tigers. He helped Boston win the World Series in the 2018 season.
