The Texas Rangers received devastating news on Wednesday that trade deadline acquisition Max Scherzer will miss the rest of the regular season after suffering an injury on Tuesday night.

Per Jeff Passan of ESPN:

Right-hander Max Scherzer is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season with a strained teres major -- a muscle that connects the scapula to the humerus. 

Scherzer is, Texas GM Chris Young told reporters, "unlikely" to pitch in the playoffs. Brutal news for the Rangers.

The Rangers enter play on Wednesday at 80-64 and 0.5 games up on both the Blue Jays and Mariners in the battle for the second wild card spot in the American League.

As for how big a loss this is for Texas?

Per ESPN Stats & Info:

Rangers P Max Scherzer is expected to miss the rest of the regular season (and potentially the postseason) due to a strained teres major muscle in his arm. 

Since Aug. 1, his .174 opponent BA is the lowest in AL and 4th-lowest in MLB in that time frame.

Overall, including his season with the New York Mets, Scherzer is 13-6 with a 3.77 ERA. He's struck out 174 batters in 152.2 innings.

He's in his 16th year with the Diamondbacks, Tigers, Nationals, Dodgers, Mets and Rangers. He's an eight-time All-Star and is also a three-time Cy Young award winner.

The Rangers will have a critical game against the Blue Jays on Wednesday night. First pitch from Rogers Centre is set for 7:07 p.m. ET.
