The World Champion Houston Astros appear likely to be without offensive star Yordan Alvarez for a while. He's been on the injured list since last week with an oblique injury.

Speaking after a 6-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night, manager Dusty Baker said this, as transcribed on Twitter by Brian McTaggart of MLB.com:

Dusty Baker: “Yordan’s a ways off and we have to carry on until he comes back.”

That is not necessarily an exact timetable from Baker, but it's certainly troubling for a team that is looking to get back to the playoffs this year, and potentially looking to repeat as World Champions. And in a loaded American League full of potential playoff teams, you can't afford to lose ground, something that is certainly possible with Alvarez on the mend.

One of the most feared hitters in all of baseball, he's hitting .272 right now with 17 homers and 55 RBI. He's also posted a .963 OPS this season.

Alvarez is a lifetime .293 hitter with 115 homers and 338 RBI. He made his major league debut in 2019 and previously played in the Dodgers organization. You'd have to think they regret that trade, as Alvarez has become an MVP candidate in Houston. He almost single-handedly won the Astros the World Series last year, hitting two big home runs in the ALDS against the Mariners and hitting a big home run against the Phillies in the World Series.

The Astros are currently 38-29 and 3.5 games back of the Rangers in the American Least West.
