Houston Astros Provide Injury Update on Starting Pitcher as Rotation Continues to Take Lumps Early
The Houston Astros, dealing with several injuries in their starting rotation, gave a health update on right-hander Jose Urquidy on Tuesday.
Per Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle on social media:
José Urquidy said he’s hopeful he can resume throwing next week after a break of 10-15 days. He said his MRI showed inflammation but no issues with his elbow ligament.
So this means that Urquidy assuredly will start the year on the injured list and is a good candidate to miss most or all of April - at the very best case scenario.
It's another loss for an Astros' rotation that is already missing Justin Verlander at the outset of the season. Lance McCullers is out until July recovering from injury and Luis Garcia is likely out for the year recovering from Tommy John surgery.
The 28-year-old Urquidy is a valuable part of the Astros staff in that he's been able to pitch out of the rotation or in relief during his tenure.
A veteran of five seasons, Urquidy has started 70 games and made nine relief appearances since debuting in 2019. He made a career-best 28 starts in 2022 and is a lifetime 27-16 with a 3.98 ERA.
Urquidy helped the Astros win the World Series in 2022 and helped them get there in 2021 as well. They have been to seven consecutive ALCS.
In addition to his work with the Astros, Urquidy has also represented Team Mexico at the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
The Astros open up the season on March 28 against the New York Yankees.
