The Los Angeles Dodgers got devastating injury news on Tuesday as it was announced that young star pitcher Dustin May will miss the rest of the season - and likely part of 2024 as well.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

May will undergo surgery July 18 to repair the flexor tendon in his right elbow.

ANALYSIS
May landed on the IL on May 18, and the news of his upcoming surgery effectively puts an end to his season. Details regarding May's recovery timeline could become clearer after his procedure, but he will most likely miss a month or two in 2024 as well. The 25-year-old righty finishes the season with a 2.63 ERA and 0.94 WHIP through 48 innings across nine starts.

Sadly, injuries are not new for May. He missed large chunks of both 2021 and 2022 after undergoing Tommy John surgery and has only thrown 191.2 major league innings in five years since his first call up.

He's got devastating stuff on the mound, armed with triple-digit fastball ability but he's yet to be able to show it off consistently.

It's certainly devastating for him, but it's also terrible for the Dodgers, who are in the midst of a playoff battle in the National League. They are 2.5 games back of the Diamondbacks in the National League West and currently hold the second spot in the wild card race. They are currently without Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler (IL) and have dealt with injuries to Julio Urias this year in the rotation, so a return by May would have been a major boost. Now, it won't happen.

The Dodgers will take on the Pirates on Wednesday night at 10:10 p.m. ET.
