New York Yankees' Leader Gerrit Cole Provides Update on His Elbow Injury, Timeline For Recovery

After being shut down recently with elbow problems, New York Yankees' ace Gerrit Cole says that he won't throw for another 3-4 weeks and then he will re-evaluate.

After New York Yankees' ace Gerrit Cole received good news this week in that he won't need Tommy John surgery, he provided an update on his health and timeline for recovery.

Per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com:

Gerrit Cole said that he is dealing with nerve inflammation and edema. “Three to four weeks no throw, and we’ll go from there.” “I think we determined that we just got a little too hot a little too quick this spring.”

Cole is still expected to miss the first 1-2 months of the season, which is a devastating blow for a Yankees team that is hoping to compete for its first World Series championship since 2009.

In Cole's absence, the Yankees will start Nestor Cortes on Opening Day, and will lean on Marcus Stroman and left-hander Carlos Rodon. After missing out on a trade for Dylan Cease, they could theoretically sign Blake Snell, but they haven't shown an indication to re-engage in those conversations.

The 33-year-old Cole is entering his 12th year in the big leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros and Yankees. He's been in New York since 2020 and won the Cy Young last year, going 15-4 with a 2.63 ERA. His ERA led the American League. He's led the AL in ERA in two separate seasons, also posting a 2.50 in 2019 with Houston.

A six-time All-Star, Cole is 145-75 lifetime with a 3.17 ERA. He's won double-digit games in nine separate seasons.

The Yankees open up the season on March 28 against the Astros.
