Seattle Mariners Shut Down Ace Reliever with Troubling Arm Worries

The Seattle Mariners, already dealing with some injury concerns in their bullpen, have now shut down ace reliever Matt Brash through the weekend.

While no one seems particularly concerned right now, it's still a troubling development for one of the most important members of the M's.

Per Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times:

The Mariners hard-throwing reliever has been shut down from throwing since after his second bullpen session of spring training on Tuesday.

Brash said he was “a little banged up.”

Per general manager Justin Hollander, the Mariners have scheduled Brash to be “down” through the weekend. The hope is he can resume a throwing program next week. He’s been doing daily rehab with the training staff and working out in the weight room in the interim.

Brash wouldn’t get into any specifics about his arm other than saying, “it just didn’t feel great” a day after the bullpen session. The Mariners are going to be cautious with his progression. There is still over a month until opening day at T-Mobile Park.

The 25-year-old native of Canada led all of baseball in appearances in 2023 with 78. He pitched to a 3.06 ERA and struck out a whopping 107 batters in 70.2 innings. Along with Andres Munoz, he makes up a dynamite back-end of Seattle's bullpen.

The team acquired hard-throwing Gregory Santos in a trade from the Chicago White Sox this offseason, but he also has been slowed in camp by "lat soreness."

Given the youth in the Mariners' rotation and the questions about their overall offensive productivity, they can ill-afford to have that bullpen banged up.
