As the Seattle Mariners push for their second consecutive playoff berth, they got some great news on Friday with regards to outfielder Jarred Kelenic.

Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports that Kelenic will report to Triple-A Tacoma for a rehab assignment next week assuming all goes well.

Divish added that there is no set length for the rehab assignment and that the M's expect him to be a major part of the lineup when he returns.

He's been on the injured list since the end of July after breaking his foot. He suffered the injury kicking a water cooler after a strikeout late in a game.

His presence in the lineup will be a welcome one for Seattle as Kelenic was enjoying his best season as a major leaguer thus far. He's hitting .252 this season with 11 home runs, 45 RBI and 12 stolen bases. He also plays good outfield, runs the bases well and provides solid energy.

The Mariners currently are using Julio Rodriguez, Teoscar Hernandez, Cade Marlowe, Dom Canzone and Dylan Moore as outfielders, so it's not clear who Kelenic would take time from.

After September 1, rosters do expand and teams are allowed to bring up one pitcher and one position player at that time, so no one needs to be sent down to accommodate Kelenic's eventual return.

The Mariners enter play on Friday at 70-55 and in a tie for the second/third wild card spot in the American League.

They'll begin a series with the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.
