St. Louis Cardinals' Injury Updates as Spring Training Looms in One Month

As spring training starts for Major League Baseball clubs in one month, there are injury updates to a trio of St. Louis Cardinals: Nolan Gorman, Brendan Donovan and Tommy Edman.

Spring training begins in month for Major League Baseball clubs and as teams get closer to reporting to Florida and Arizona, there are some injury updates with regards to the St. Louis Cardinals.

On Nolan Gorman, per John Denton of MLB.com:

#STLCards lefty Nolan Gorman said he has been working with a nutrition program that has increased his flexibility & decreased his back inflammation. Gorman, who has battled back pain since a 2020 weight-lifting injury, wants to adhere to the program to play more games in 2024.

The 23-year-old slugger played in 119 games for St. Louis last season, hitting 27 homers and bringing in 76. He hit .236 overall with a .328 on-base percentage.

On Tommy Edman, per Jeff Jones:

Edman says he may be slightly delayed on the hitting side heading into camp. Going through a progression. He expects to be ready for opening day, but hasn’t had any bat to ball contact (other than wiffle balls in his rehab) this winter.

The 28-year-old had wrist surgery in October and is coming off a year in which he hit .248 with a .307 on-base percentage. He had 13 homers and 47 RBI in 137 games and also stole 27 bases.

And finally, infielder Brendan Donovan, who had flexor surgery in August, plans on being ready to go by spring training, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Donovan's surgically repaired right arm was confined to a brace for a month. He couldn't even sweat because the incision required time to heal. He could read, though, so he started digging into books and materials about how to improve as a leader. The best way, everyone agrees, includes action.

Donovan has gone from building his endurance back up with stationary bicycle sprints to putting on his spikes and launching balls across the infield. The first throw was a lollipop. Now, the heat has returned. He has two weeks left of a throwing program and his hitting program shifts gears into live hitting next week. It's all happening in Jupiter, where Donovan and his wife have relocated to be close to the team's home away from St. Louis.

Despite the injuries, he hit .284 last season in 95 games. Lifetime, he's a .283 hitter with 16 homers and 79 RBI.
