Toronto Blue Jays Activate All-Star Closer Jordan Romano From Injured List

The Toronto Blue Jays have activated closer Jordan Romano from the 15-day injured list, the team announced Tuesday.
To make room for Romano, the Blue Jays optioned right-hander Nate Pearson to Triple-A Buffalo.
Romano has not appeared in the majors since July 28 against the Los Angeles Angels. The reliever hit the injured list with lower back inflammation the next day.
Toronto sent Romano on a rehab assignment to Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday, and he pitched 1.0 scoreless inning during his time down in the minors.
Before he went down with his back injury, Romano was 4-5 with a 2.79 ERA, 1.190 WHIP, 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings and 28 saves in 2023. Romano has only blown three saves this year, and he has converted on his last 18 save opportunities dating back to mid-May.

Romano was named an All-Star for the second-consecutive year earlier this summer. The 6-foot-5 Canadian righty owns a 2.21 ERA and 1.056 WHIP over the past four seasons, and he has the second-most saves in the American League since 2021.
Toronto is 8-8 since Romano hit the injured list, using trade deadline acquisition Jordan Hicks as their primary closer in his absence. The former St. Louis Cardinals right-hander is 3-for-3 in save opportunities, but he owns a 4.76 ERA, 1.412 WHIP and .286 batting average against in his six appearances as a Blue Jay.
Romano will be available out of Toronto's bullpen Tuesday night against the Philadelphia Phillies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. ET.
