The San Diego Padres appear to have avoided a major scare on Monday night.

Star third baseman Manny Machado left the game after being hit on the hand by Royals pitcher Brad Keller but X-rays came back negative.

Dennis Lin, who covers the Padres for The Athletic, tweeted:

X-rays on Manny Machado's hand were negative, according to Bob Melvin. He'll be re-evaluated tomorrow.

In this case, "tomorrow" refers to Tuesday.

Dr. David Chao, a former sports team doctor with the San Diego Chargers, took note of the play on Twitter and offered up this analysis:

#MannyMachado @Padres hit by pitch and leaves game after initially staying in. Based on location/mechanism/force, would expect X-rays to be negative. Worry for swelling on bottom hand which is important for grip. Could have short term absence but hope to avoid an IL stint.

The Padres certainly hope that Machado can avoid the injured list. Both he -- and the team -- have started slowly through the first quarter of the season. The Padres are in third place in the National League West at 20-22 overall. They are seven games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who reside in first.

As for Machado, he's hitting just .231 with five homers and 19 RBI. He's added two steals as well.

For his career, Machado is a .280 hitter with 288 homers and 872 RBI. He's spent time with the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers, in addition to the Padres.

He is a six-time All-Star and a two-time Gold Glove winner.

The Padres beat the Royals 4-0 on Monday and the two teams will play on Tuesday at 9:40 p.m. ET.
