Boston Red Sox Sign Former Philadelphia Phillies Prospect Dalton Guthrie to Minor League Deal

Shortstop-turned-outfielder Dalton Guthrie spent most of 2023 in Triple-A with the Phillies, Braves and Giants' affiliates, and now he's set to join the Red Sox organization.

The Boston Red Sox signed Dalton Guthrie to a minor league contract on Wednesday, according to the MiLB transaction log.

Guthrie came up through the Philadelphia Phillies' farm system over the past few years, but also spent time with the Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants' minor league squads in 2023. The 28-year-old shortstop-turned-outfielder has 37 games of MLB experience under his belt.

The Phillies selected Guthrie in the sixth round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of Florida, where he helped lead the Gators to a College World Series title his junior year.

Guthrie worked his way up to Triple-A by 2021, and he spent almost all of 2022 at that same level. Philadelphia called him up to the big leagues that September, and he proceeded to hit .333 with a .976 OPS and 0.4 WAR in 14 appearances. Although he made it onto the Phillies' NLDS roster, Guthrie did not log an at-bat in the series.

In 2023, Guthrie got some more run in the majors. His production fell off, however, as he hit .167 with a .494 OPS and 0.3 WAR in 23 games.

The Giants purchased Guthrie's contract in June 2023, only for the Braves to claim him off waivers in July. Neither franchise gave him a shot in the big leagues.

Guthrie is a .289 hitter with 16 home runs, 97 RBI, 30 stolen bases and a .791 OPS in 209 career Triple-A games.

The Red Sox are likely to deploy Guthrie to Triple-A Worcester to start the year. Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, Tyler O'Neill, Masataka Yoshida and Rob Refsnyder are projected to be the outfielders on Boston's Opening Day roster, while top prospect Ceddanne Rafaela should get the call later in 2024.
