Boston Red Sox' Trevor Story Out to Great Start in Rehab Assignment

Boston Red Sox star Trevor Story began a rehab assignment on Friday and did so in a big way.

The Boston Red Sox, who enter play on Saturday at 2.5 games back in the American League wild card picture, got some great news from the minor leagues on Friday night as shortstop Trevor Story started his rehab assignment in a big way.

Story, who has been out all season following an internal brace procedure on his throwing elbow, played his first game for Double-A Portland.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Story (elbow) went 1-for-2 with a three-run homer, a walk and two runs scored in his rehab debut Friday at Double-A Portland.

ANALYSIS
Story also played five innings at shortstop in a promising start to what is likely to be a lengthy minor-league rehab stint. He's expected to serve as Portland's designated hitter Saturday before then logging five more innings at shortstop Sunday.

That's huge news for a Sox team that needs all the help it can get if it wants to return to the playoffs this season. Shortstop has been a black hole offensively for the Sox this year, so if Story can get going and contribute early, it's a major boost for Boston.

When he does make his season debut, it will be his second year with the Sox after signing a six-year deal before the 2022 season.

He hit .238 with 16 home runs and 66 RBIs last year for the Red Sox. He played in just 94 games a season ago with unrelated injuries.

The 30-year-old is a two-time All-Star who has received MVP votes in three different seasons. He's a lifetime .268 hitter with 174 home runs. He had played with the Colorado Rockies prior.
