Chicago White Sox Designate Minor Leaguer to Make Room For Prospects Acquired in Dylan Cease Trade

In order to make room for the slew of prospects acquired in they Dylan Cease trade on Wednesday, the Chicago White Sox have designated outfielder Peyton Burdick for assignment.

On Wednesday night, the Chicago White Sox struck on the trade market, sending ace pitcher Dylan Cease to the San Diego Padres for a massive prospect haul.

Unfortunately, as a result, outfielder Peyton Burdick became a roster casualty, getting DFA'd to make room for the newcomers.

Per the team on social media:

The #WhiteSox have acquired RHP Drew Thorpe, Jairo Iriarte & Steven Wilson and OF Samuel Zavala from the San Diego Padres in exchange for RHP Dylan Cease. Thorpe (No. 5), Zavala (No. 7) & Iriarte (No. 8) are rated by http://MLB.com among the Top 10 prospects in the Padres organization.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the White Sox designated outfielder Peyton Burdick for assignment.

Because he was designated for assignment, Burdick will have seven days to be traded, released or sent to the minors. He could still end up in the White Sox organization if he lands in the minors.

The 27-year-old Ohio native has spent parts of two years in the big leagues with the Miami Marlins. He has played in 46 career major league games, hitting .200 with five homers and 13 RBI.

In spring training thus far, he was hitting just .071 with one RBI.

The White Sox finished fourth in the American League Central a year ago and after trading Cease, they may very well end up finishing last in the division this year.

It could be between them and the Oakland Athletics in the competition for the worst record in the league and the best odds at the No. 1 pick.
