Former Top Prospect Gets DFA'd By Chicago White Sox
Former top prospect Luis Patino has been designated for assignment by the Chicago White Sox.
Patino had been acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays this past summer.
Per Kyle Glaser of Baseball America:
The White Sox have designated RHP Luis Patiño for assignment and selected RHP Josimar Cousin from Double-A Birmingham.
Patiño, a one-time top prospect, had nearly as many walks (12) as strikeouts (13) in 7.1 innings with the White Sox after they picked him up last August.
After being designated off the 40-man roster, Patino can be claimed by another team, traded, released or he can be sent to the minor leagues.
Given his age and former prospect status, it wouldn't be shocking if the White Sox wanted to keep him in the organization - and it also wouldn't be shocking if someone else wanted to put in a waiver claim.
In 45 career appearances at the big league level, Patino is 7-6 with a 5.02 ERA. He's started 23 games in his career between the Padres, Rays and White sox. He made 15 starts for the Rays in 2021.
He made nine appearances in the big leagues this past season.
He was the No. 19 prospect in all of baseball in 2021 as ranked by MLB.com.
With Patino out of the fold - at least for now - the White Sox will continue their roster churn under new general manager Chris Getz.
Chicago finished fourth in the American League Central last season and had the third worst record in the American League.
