In this story:

Kansas City Royals' superstar Bobby Witt Jr. spoke to the Kansas City Star recently about the idea of a potential contract extension with the organization.

I think there is some talks here and there," he said. “So we’re just kind of waiting to see. I love this organization and love this team. It’s just kind of one of those things. If the time is right, the time’s right.”

This is not a pressing need for either side as Witt Jr. isn't a free agent until the 2028 season. That said, he's a player that the Royals undoubtedly want to keep in Kansas City long-term, and every year that you wait, the price goes up.

Also, each year that you wait gives Witt Jr. a chance to be upset at the organization's trajectory. The Royals had the second-worst record in all of baseball this past season and the team doesn't appear to be close to contention in 2024, either. The last thing that you want is for your superstar to be disgruntled and start to think he wants out.

One of the best young players in all of baseball, Witt Jr. hit .276 this past season with 30 homers. He also stole 49 bases, led baseball in triples with 11 and drove in 96. Somehow, he was not named an All-Star.

He finished fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting in the American League back in the 2022 season. The award was won by Julio Rodriguez of the Seattle Mariners that season.
