Louisiana State University outfielder Dylan Crews enters the 2023 season as the projected no. 1 overall pick in the 2023 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, according to MLB Pipeline.

The Pittsburgh Pirates won the first ever MLB Draft Lottery, guaranteeing themselves the first overall pick in the upcoming draft. The Pirates have selected prospects Termarr Johnson, Henry Davis, Nick Gonzales, Quinn Priester, Travis Swaggerty and Shane Baz with their first picks of the draft in recent years, tracing back to 2017.

Crews, entering his junior season, was a consensus All-American in 2022. Through 125 career collegiate games, Crews has a .356 Batting Average, .458 On Base Percentage, 40 home runs and 114 RBI.

Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 203 pounds, Crews is a native of Longwood, Florida. Believed to be a five-tool player, Crews' season begins Feb. 17, when LSU hosts Western Michigan, for First Responders Weekend.

LSU, who finished 40-22 last season, is the no. 1 ranked team in the nation. Six other SEC teams — Tennessee, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Florida, Arkansas and Vanderbilt — enter the season ranked in the top ten.

An SEC team has won the last three College World Series. Ole Miss won in 2022, Mississippi State won in 2021 and Vanderbilt won in 2019. There was no College World Series in 2020, due to the rapid spread of COVID-19.
