The San Francisco Giants enter play on Friday at 75-71 and in a three-way tie for the third and final wild card spot in the National League.

But as they battle for their playoff fate this year, the Giants ownership group has already made a big decision for next year: General manager Farhan Zaidi and manager Gabe Kapler will both be back.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle had the story, complete with quotes from owner Greg Johnson:

The Giants had an opt-out clause for Zaidi “that expired months ago,” Johnson told the Chronicle by text Thursday. “We stand fully behind him.”

During San Francisco’s recent six-game losing streak, there were rumblings of growing discontent among the Giants ownership group with Kapler, but Johnson said Thursday, “They will both be here next year.” Both are under contract through 2024.

Zaidi hasn’t wavered in his support for Kapler and Thursday he told the Chronicle, “Gabe’s done a great job navigating us through some challenges this season. We rank third in MLB in playing time allocated to rookies, and Gabe and his staff continue to do outstanding work supporting and developing those young players.

The Giants are tied in the NL wild card race with the Diamondbacks and the Cincinnati Reds.

San Francisco will be back in action on Friday night when they travel to Colorado to take on the Rockies, who have the worst record in the NL.

First pitch is set for 8:40 p.m. ET as Logan Webb (SF) goes up against Chase Anderson (COL).
