Seattle Mariners Reportedly Could Bring Up Former Cy Young Winner Soon

With Emerson Hancock getting shelled on Sunday afternoon, could the Seattle Mariners bring up the newly-signed Dallas Keuchel to make a spot start in the rotation? It sounds like it's possible.

According to Seattle Mariners' Insider Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710, former Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel could be an option to make a start next week if the team wants to send Emerson Hancock down to Triple-A.

Hancock, who got the win his first time out in 2024, was blasted on Sunday by the Milwaukee Brewers and lasted just 3.1 innings. Furthermore, his velocity was down as well. If the team wants to send him back to Triple-A, potentially Bryan Woo could be ready to re-join the rotation (he's been out with injury), or maybe Keuchel could step in for a spot start.

From Drayer:

By the time the Mariners need a fifth starter again, could Bryan Woo be ready? Seattle’s planned No. 5 arm for this season, Woo was shut down after a March 23 throwing session and began the year on the IL with elbow inflammation, but he resumed throwing last Tuesday. If all is well, he shouldn’t take long to build back up as he was only down nine days and otherwise had a full spring training. As it is the beginning of his season, however, the Mariners will want him fully ready.

If Woo can’t make that start, there is an open 40-man spot and others available. Newly signed left-hander Dallas Keuchel, a 12-year veteran and former Cy Young Award winner, threw five scoreless innings in his debut with the Rainiers on Sunday afternoon...

Keuchel is a 12-year veteran who has played with the Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers and Minnesota Twins. Lifetime, he's 103-92, is a two-time All-Star and he won the Cy Young back in 2015.

While his career numbers are good, he's only 13-21 over the last three seasons. He's only thrown just under 100 innings over the last two years.

He's currently 36-years-old.

The Mariners open up a series on Monday at the Toronto Blue Jays.
