Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers Finalize Trade, Tyler Glasnow Extension Complete

After signing Shohei Ohtani last weekend, the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow in a megadeal with the Tampa Bay Rays and signed him to a massive extension.

UPDATE, 2 P.M. (Dec. 16): The trade, and Glasnow's contract extension, have been made official.

Here's the announcement from the Dodgers:

The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired RHP Tyler Glasnow and OF Manuel Margot from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for RHP Ryan Pepiot and OF Jonny DeLuca. Additionally, Glasnow has agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Dodgers for $136.5 million.

UPDATE, 12 P.M. (Dec. 15): Glasnow and the Dodgers are in the final stages of agreeing to a four-year contract extension. Including his salary for 2024, Glasnow's new deal will pay him $135 million over five years.

Glasnow will also have a $20 million player option tacked onto the end of his contract, while the Dodgers have a $30 million team option that same year.

Once Glasnow puts pen to paper, the trade will be official.

Per Jeff Passan of ESPN:

BREAKING: Right-hander Tyler Glasnow and the Los Angeles Dodgers are finalizing a five-year, $135 million contract, sources tell ESPN. Once the deal is complete, the trade of Glasnow and Manuel Margot from the Rays to the Dodgers for Ryan Pepiot and Jonny DeLuca will be official.

UPDATE, 10:30 A.M. (Dec. 15): The trade is nearly official and the extension for Glasnow is almost done.

Per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Times:

Hearing Glasnow extension with #Dodgers is “pretty much” done and just down to “finalizing some small stuff,” so the trade from #Rays (with Margot and $4M for Pepiot and Deluca) should be official soon.

After signing Shohei Ohtani earlier this week, the Los Angeles Dodgers are also acquiring starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow in a mega deal with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Per Jeff Passan of ESPN:

BREAKING: The Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays are in agreement on a trade to send RHP Tyler Glasnow and OF Manuel Margot to the Dodgers for RHP Ryan Pepiot and OF Jonny Deluca -- contingent on Glasnow signing an extension with L.A., which is expected, sources tell ESPN.

The extension window for Tyler Glasnow opened this morning, sources said, and there is a strong belief from those involved that it will get done. Details on the trade and everything it entails are live at ESPN:

Acquiring Glasnow is a huge move for the Dodgers and continues to vault them into major contender status in the National League. The Dodgers rotation was ravaged by injuries and other issues in 2023 and Glasnow goes a long way towards helping solve that in 2024.

The team will be without Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin for most or all of 2024 because of injury while Julio Urias has departed as well. Clayton Kershaw's status for next year is also unknown at this time. He is injured as well and wouldn't be ready until at least June - if he even wants to return.

The 30-year-old Glasnow went 10-7 last season with a 3.53 ERA over 21 starts. Lifetime, he's 30-27 with a 3.89 ERA.

As for the Rays' acquisitions: Pepiot is 26 years old and went 2-1 last season with a 2.14 ERA. Deluca is 25 years old and has 42 career major league at-bats.
