In this story:

The New York Yankees lost to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday by a score of 6-5.

As a result of the loss, the Yanks were swept by their division rivals, have now lost eight games in a row and have fallen to a whopping 9.0 games back in the wild card chase.

It's been a dreadful second-half of the season for New York, who entered the year with World Series aspirations after signing Carlos Rodon.

This absurd stat from @OptaSTATS show just how bad things have gotten for New York.

Yankees Ben Rortvedt (.098 batting average) is the first hitter in the last 50 seasons to enter a plate appearance with a sub-100 average as his team's potential final out with both the potential game-winning and game-tying runs on base (minimum 40 at-bats).

That's incredibly random, even for us, but it highlights where the Yankees are at. Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Yankees had runners at first and second with two out with a chance to win the game, and they had to send up a guy hitting under .100.

The Yankees have long been one of the most vaunted offenses in baseball, but that's not the case this year. They are 23rd in baseball in runs scored, 29th in batting average, and 26th in on-base percentage.

They are back in action on Tuesday night when they host the Washington Nationals, who just won the Little League Classic over the Philadelphia Phillies.

That game begins at 7:05 p.m. ET.
