Two-Time All-Star, Former Yankees Catcher Remains Unsigned Free Agent
Pitchers and catchers have begun reporting to spring training, and some free agents still remain unsigned.
One free agent that is still available on the open market is two-time American League All-Star Gary Sanchez.
Sanchez received All-Star honors in 2017 and 2019, as a member of the New York Yankees.
Sanchez was at one point a very promising prospect in the Yankees' farm system that found immediate success in the big leagues. Over his first 175 career games, Sanchez slashed .284/.354/.923 with 53 home runs. Sanchez was limited behind the plate however, and his defensive struggled carried over offensively too. After slashing .204/.307/.730 in 2021, the Yankees traded him to the Minnesota Twins along with Gio Urshela for Josh Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Ben Rortvedt.
Sanchez batted .205 with a .282 On Base Percentage and .659 OPS, 16 home runs and 61 RBI with the Twins in 2022.
While with the Yankees, Sanchez's club reached the American League Championship Series in 2017, and won an American League East division title in 2019. It was the Bronx Bombers' first division title since 2012.
Sanchez could be an interesting buy-low option for a number of clubs looking to add power to their roster. Sanchez hit 20 home runs in 2016, playing only 53 games. He hit 33 more in 2017, and a career-high 34 in 2019. Sanchez finished second in American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2016.
