6-Fight Losing Streak: Bobby Green Submits Tony Ferguson at UFC 291

Is this the biggest fall from grace in UFC history?

None have fallen from grace quite like the UFC's Tony Ferguson.

Bobby Green has submitted Tony Ferguson with an arm triangle at UFC 291 on July 29. Green locked in the submission in the dying seconds of the third and final round, rendering the UFC veteran unconscious. This loss marks the sixth straight defeat for Ferguson, and the fourth in a row by finish.

On the brighter side, Green broke his own three-fight skid to Islam Makhachev, Drew Dober, and Jared Gordon (no contest).

Ferguson, a former interim lightweight champion, was once the proud owner of the longest win streak in the UFC. His once in a generation lightweight run from 2013 to 2019 saw Ferguson pick up 12 straight victories with nine finishes. During this time, Ferguson saw five failed fights with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

It all came crashing down for Ferguson at UFC 249 when the fifth Nurmagomedov bout was cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic. Ferguson cut weight for the event on March 18 2020, and then again for his replacement opponent Justin Gaethje on April 9.

What followed was one of the most one-sided beatdowns in UFC history, Ferguson was woefully outstruck throughout the fight and TKO'd in the fifth round, losing his interim title and forfeiting his title claim forever.

What's next for Ferguson? Hopefully retirement, at 39 years-of-age, a title comeback is unfortunately a pipe dream.
