Austin Mack, Folsom race past Del Oro 34-7 in Sierra Foothill League matchup
FOLSOM, Calif. — Austin Mack played against some familiar faces on Friday night, guys he grew up with in Placer County, and guys who wanted to toss his team on their collective heads. It didn't happen.
With Mack passing for a career-best 410 yards and firing five touchdown passes, SBLive No. 1 Folsom raced past No. 3 Del Oro-Loomis 34-7 on Friday night at Prairie City Stadium in what figures to be the Sierra Foothill League championship bout.
"I know a lot of those guys, and it was fun," Mack said.
A 6-foot-6, 220-pound junior, Mack started his high school career at Del Oro before the move to Folsom before his sophomore year. He had touchdown tosses of 1 and 1 yards to Julio Garcia and Donovan Maxey-Parler, of 60 yards to Onterrio Smith, 15 yards to Colin Gallagher and 25 yards to Notre Dame-bound Rico Flores, Jr.
"He played a great game," Folsom coach Paul Doherty said.
Folsom led 21-7 at the half as Del Oro scored on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Caden Pinnick to Austin Unfried, but the prolific Golden Eagles were otherwise stymied in suffering their first loss after a 7-0 start. Folsom is 7-1 and now sits as the lone unbeaten team in the SFL with two weeks to go.
Those two weeks feature the teams that defeated Folsom last season, denying the Bulldogs their seventh successive SFL championship since entering that conference before the 2014 season. Rocklin and Granite Bay beat Folsom last season to place first and second in league, and Folsom was third, but had the last laugh, winning the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championship and advancing to its fifth CIF state final since 2010.
"We still have a lot to prove," Doherty said of the revenge games against Rocklin and Granite Bay.
Folsom celebrated its 100th year as a high school on Friday. It was also homecoming night.
"Great night but we have a lot more work to do," Mack said.
