SBLive’s San Diego Section Baseball Top 10: Cathedral Catholic rises to No. 6

The Dons are in the hunt for the top seed in the San Diego Section Division 2 playoffs.

Cathedral Catholic took advantage of their off-week from Western League play last week.

The Dons, ranked No. 6 in this week's SBLive San Diego Section Top 10 baseball rankings, beat Bonita Vista and Scripps Ranch in non-league contests last week. They've won four of their past five games as they enter this week's series against rival St. Augustine to wrap up the regular season.

SAN DIEGO SECTION TOP 10 BASEBALL RANKINGS

1. La Costa Canyon (20-5)

The Mavericks dropped the opening game against Torrey Pines last week before grabbing each of the final two games. They can capture an outright North County Coastal League title with a win over San Marcos on Monday.

2. Eastlake (21-3)

The Titans sandwiched two non-league wins around a key 4-3 victory against Montgomery last week. They'll play three times this week including finishing a previously started game against Montgomery from earlier in the season.

3. Rancho Bernardo (17-7)

The Broncos swept rival Poway last week, shutting out the Titans in each of the first two games. They'll close out the regular season with a league game against Torrey Pines on Monday and a makeup game against Westview on Thursday.

4. Torrey Pines (18-6)

The Falcons beat top-ranked La Costa Canyon 9-3 on Monday before dropping the final two matchups of the week, 5-0 and 6-3. They'll head to Rancho Bernardo to close out the regular season.

5. Montgomery (18-3)

Montgomery beat Otay Ranch 9-8 and lost to Eastlake 4-3 last week. They trail Eastlake by one game in the Metro Mesa League standings with three games to play.

6. Cathedral Catholic (16-8)

The Dons has the week off from league play and picked up dominant wins over Scripps Ranch and Bonita Vista. They'll take on rival St. Augustine in a three-game series this week while chasing Montgomery for the top seed in the Division 2 playoffs.

7. Carlsbad (17-9)

Carlsbad played three one-run games with San Marcos last week, dropping the final two. Two league games against Poway are up this week before they learn their playoff seeding on Saturday.

8. La Jolla Country Day (16-9)

La Jolla Country Day needs one win in this week's series against Bishop's to wrap up the Coastal League championship. They took two of three games from Francis Parker last week, winning Friday's road game in extra innings.

9. Granite Hills (13-7)

Granite Hills went 2-1 in league play last week, shutting out Grossmont and Steele Canyon before falling to Helix on Friday. They'll play Grossmont and Santana this week, chasing the Sultans in the league standings.

10. St. Augustine (16-7)

The Saints ended their three-game losing streak by taking the final two games from Point Loma in last week's series. They enter this week's series against rival Cathedral Catholic sitting just inside the bubble for the Open Division playoffs.
