Newbury Park's Shane Rosenthal making plays, creating recruiting buzz

Two-way standout Shane Rosenthal has over 1,000 yards receiving and 13 TDs in seven games already this season.

NEWBURY PARK, CALIFORNIA - It didn't take long for Newbury Park's Shane Rosenthal to make an impression.

On Agoura's first offensive possession, he intercepted the ball early in the first quarter — but his performance was far from over.

He was the best player on the field in Newbury Park's 35-14 win over the Chargers Friday night as he went on to haul in nine receptions for 141 yards and three touchdowns.

"Kid is a stud," Agoura coach Dustin Croick said.

The junior wideout has one scholarship offer from UNLV right now. But the chatter surrounding his recruitment is picking up steam.

"It's picked up slight," Rosenthal said of his recruitment. "But I'm hoping after the season it picks up more and more."

Recruiting analyst from 247Sports.com, Greg Biggins, believes Rosenthal is a Power 5 conference-type player.

"I think he's a Power 5 guy, you watch Pac-12, Mountain West football and I see a lot of teams he can play for," Biggins said. "He's not just sure handed and reliable, he's an athletic kid who runs well and makes plays no matter where you line him up."

If Rosenthal keeps up his play, more schools will be calling.

He's up to 1,054 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns in seven games this season. He tallied 234 yards on 17 receptions against Santa Maria St. Joseph and 290 yards on 12 receptions against Moorpark.

"He'd be great in the slot in college," Newbury Park coach Joe Smigiel said.

In addition to Rosenthal's skill, his attitude is just as recruitable.

"I'll play wherever they want me. I can play safety, too," he said.

Rosenthal didn't just turn in his second three-touchdown game in a row Friday, he also had two interceptions against Agoura (6-1).

He also runs track at Newbury Park (5-2) and believes he'll be under 11 seconds in the 100 meter and under 22 seconds in the 200 meter.

"I take pride in being an athlete," he said. "Whatever I'm doing I want to excel at."
