LAKELAND, Fla. - Ta'Niya Latson scored 24 points to lead American Heritage to a 69-31 victory over Bishop Moore in the FHSAA Class 5A girls basketball state championship on Saturday.
It is the fifth consecutive state championship overall and third in 5A for the Lady Patriots. With the five consecutive championships, they tie Jacksonville Ribault for the second most consecutive titles in FHSAA history. Miami Country Day, who won six straight from 2014-2019, has the most.
Latson, a Florida State signee, scored 18 points in the first half as the Patriots built a 43-16 lead. She finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Senior forward Emani Theodule added 15 points and senior guard Joey Delancy finished with 14.
The Lady Hornets were playing in their first state championship game in six years. They were led by junior forward Brooke Allen and junior guard Lynnelle Mosqueda who finished with six points apiece.
“We came out with a good game plan. These girls played hard and I couldn’t be prouder of them,” American Heritage Plantation head coach Greg Farias said.
The Lady Patriots shot 44 percent from the field for the game and 53 percent (9-of-17) from long distance.
