LAKELAND, Fla. - In the final game of the 2021-2022 Florida high school girls basketball season, Dr. Phillips returned to the promised land.
The Lady Panthers beat Miami High 47-45 to win their fifth girls basketball state title in school history - and their first since 2013.
Dr. Phillips was led by sophomore guard Trinity Turner who finished with a game-high 19 points, including 13 in the second half. Kalea Rainey added 12 points.
The Lady Panthers only lead of the game came on Anilys Rolon's 3-pointer from the right wing with 22 seconds left in the game to put them up by two.
“We felt like underdogs all year long, nobody believed in us going into the season,” Dr. Phillips head coach Anthony Jones said.
The Lady Stingarees were led by senior guard Janay Quinn who finished with a team-high 11 points. Danajah Peterson and Sydney Wilson added eight points apiece.
It’s the third time in the last four years the Stingarees have finished as state runners-up. They won the Class 7A state title in 2020.
“It’s a hard one to swallow for sure,” Miami head coach Sam Baumgarten said. “We were right there for 31 of the 32 minutes, and one shot was the difference.”
