Could NIL be coming for high school sports in Florida?

NIL coming to Florida takes another step come next week. 

According to a report by USA Today’s Jon Santucci, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) plans to discuss the possibility of bringing NIL to the Sunshine State in their board meeting taking place next week on Sunday and Monday in Gainesville.

Back in October, Georgia became the 30th state, including the District of Columbia, to approve name, image, likeness (NIL) for student athletes, and it seemed like not a matter of if but when it would trickle throughout the rest of the Southeast region. 

Florida is one of the 20 states throughout the country that has yet to approve allowing NIL deals for student athletes. Among other notables in the Southeast region are Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and South Carolina. 

Something the association will take in great consideration, according to the report, is the fact that Florida does not have strict transfer policies in place unlike some of its neighboring states like Georgia. 

Another thing to take in consideration is the number of total athletes that will actually get signed to NIL deals. 

According to Connect Savannah reporter Travis Jaudon back in late January, the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) released data to show that 44 of 429,714 student-athletes have signed NIL deals since it was approved back in October.
