Cartersville and Calhoun opened Region 7-Class 5A play Tuesday with a close battle between rivals, but one big Cartersville inning was the difference.
The Hurricanes (8-3, 1-0) strung together singles in a four-run fourth inning that was enough for a 4-2 win over the Yellowjackets (10-3, 0-1), who led 2-0 after two innings.
Hank Smith had two hits, and Caleb Daniel, Jacob Ray and Blake Sutton each had RBI singles for Cartersville. Eight batters combined for the Hurricanes' nine hits.
Ryan Johnson gave up two earned runs in five innings to earn the win, and Phillip Schiltz recorded a two-inning save.
Kyle Sutton went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Cohen Chadwick hit an RBI double for Calhoun.
