Football preview: Cedar Grove at Colquitt County

The Saints-Packers tilt will be nationally televised on ESPNU on Friday night

MOULTRIE, GEORGIA- Whenever a game is going to be seen by potentially thousands or even millions around the country, it becomes a big deal. 

The undefeated Colquitt County Packers will welcome into town the Cedar Grove Saints, who enter the game with a deceiving record of 2-3. Though the game may look like its lost some of the luster because of the three losses on the Cedar Grove end, this could end up being a good one down in South Georgia. 

All the talk this season in AAAAAAA has been about Buford, but don't be sleeping on this talented Colquitt County crew that's been extremely impressive from the season's outset. 

The Packers opened up the 2023 season with a dominant 48-17 rout of Dutch Fork (South Carolina) at home. In that game, Georgia commitment Ny Carr (30 catches, 489 yards, nine touchdowns) started his senior campaign with an absolutely ridiculous 1-handed grab and is an early candidate for Offensive Player of the Year in the Peach State. 

Another pass catcher the Saints' defense will have to worry about is tight end Landen Thomas, who is committed to Florida State. Thomas has caught 13 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown.  

Operating the Packers' no-huddle offense is quarterback Neko Fann, who also plays on the school's baseball team. Fann this season has completed 70-of-111 passes for 937 yards and 14 touchdowns to just a mere two interceptions. Joining Fann in the backfield is a pair of 200-plus yard rushers is Dayshawn Brown (276 yards) and Ramsey Dennis (220 yards). 

Leading the Packers' defense is Duke commit Tyshon Reed Jr. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound defensive end has tallied 21 tackles and two sacks so far this season. Colquitt County middle linebacker Nick Pace has a team-high 41 tackles. 

Flipping over to the Cedar Grove end of things, on offense everything starts with the play of quarterback EJ Colson, a UCF commitment. Colson led Cedar Grove to the AAA state championship game as they finished with a record of 11-3 in 2022. As a sophomore in 2022, Colson was spectacular and completed 182-of-290 passes for 2,632 yards, 29 touchdowns and a mere six picks. 

On defense for the Saints, be on the watch for 6-foot-1, 280-pound senior defensive tackle Kyle Mosley, who is a UAB commitment. Other defensive players that standout on defense is Maryland commit Lakhi Roland at cornerback and Western Kentucky commit Jakyre Horton at safety.
