What was an old idea in concept may be new again and in the process of becoming reality in the state of Georgia.

According to a report by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Todd Holcomb, the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) is discussing a plan that would have private schools playing in their own state title games, separating from public schools from classes 3A-A.

Dr. Curt Miller, the GHSA Reclass Chairman, made the motion to consider a plan from another committee member, Muscogee County athletic director Jeff Battles.

Back in August of 2021, the GHSA considered separating the private schools from public, with a planned implementation during the 2022-2023 academic year.

Many of the larger private schools, such Benedictine, Blessed Trinity, Greater Atlanta Christian, Lovett, Marist, Pace Academy, St. Pius, Westminster and Woodward Academy, would’ve been the most affected, but the plan was not adopted.

Now, it’s up for discussion once again and it will be interesting to see if the aforementioned schools remain a part of the GHSA as they were unanimously against the idea.

Talks of reclassification for the 2024-2025 season are already underway and possibilities vary from the Class 7A classification being removed, as well the proposal to have private schools taking part in their own state championship games, separate from public schools.

It may again fail to come to pass, but it is an interesting story worth following.
