Vote: GHSA state championships football offensive player of the week (12/14/2023)

We have 10 candidates for your voting consideration

The Georgia High School Football GHSA State Championships at Mercedes-Benz Stadium are complete as we finish up our Player of the Week polls.

As such, we have 10 athletes nominated this week for the SBLive Georgia GHSA state championships football offensive player of the week award from December 11-13, and we ask you, the fans, to help decide who should indeed be the top athlete selected. Voting will conclude on Sunday, December 31st at 11:59 p.m. The winner will be announced at the beginning of 2024.

Editor’s note: Our corresponding poll is intended to be fun, and we do not set limits on how many times a fan can vote during the competition. This poll is specifically for fans to vote on the players that have been nominated and in no way discredits any other player that may not be mentioned in our poll.

Here are the nominations:

Aaron Philo, QB, Prince Avenue Christian: Not one can say they completed the feat Philo did in the Wolverines’ 49-32 defeat of Swainsboro for the Class 1A-Division 1 state championship. Philo, a Georgia Tech commit, passed Trevor Lawrence’s Georgia passing record with his 320-yard, three touchdown performance.

CJ Dockery, WR, Prince Avenue Christian: The sophomore wide receiver made the most of his targets in the state championship win against Swainsboro. Dockery caught eight passes for 100 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Klyler McGrinn, QB, Bowden: Looking to notch back-to-back Class 1A-Division 2 state championships, McGrinn led the way. Not with his arm, however, but with his legs as McGrinn rushed for 185 yards and scored three touchdowns in a thrilling 28-27 win over Manchester.

Caden Mcgatha, QB, Pierce County: Needing three extra sessions of overtime to decide the winner of the Class 2A state championship, Mcgatha was the guy for Pierce County down the stretch. The junior rushed for 258 yards on a staggering 53 attempts and four touchdowns, also throwing for 126, two scores in a 48-45 win over Rockmart.

Ahmad Gordon, RB, Perry: In search of the program’s first ever state championship, it was going to take an all around effort offensively. Gordon led the way on the ground for the Panthers in a 38-27 win over Stockbridge for the Class 4A title, rushing for 82 yards and scoring three touchdowns.

Cobey Thompkins, QB, Stockbridge: The senior quarterback did everything he could to lead Stockbridge to a state championship, but just fell short. Thompkins threw for 155 yards, three touchdowns and also rushed for 123, and one score in the loss to Perry.

Elliott Colson, QB, Cedar Grove: Going back-to-back when it comes to state championships is never easy. What did look easy was Cedar Grove’s offense amassing yards and scoring touchdowns in its 49-28 Class 3A title win over Savannah Christian. Colson threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.

Fred Brown, RB, Coffee: Coffee County has waited a longtime to claim its first-ever state championship. The taste of bringing a title back home to Douglas was sweet behind a strong rushing performance by Brown in a 31-14 win for the 5A championship. The running back bullied his way to 166 yards on 35 brushing carries and scored a touchdown.

Maurice Hansley, QB, Coffee: It wasn’t just Brown taking in on all the fun at the Benz and getting the horn sounded. Hansley was the orchestrator offensively, compiling 214 all-purpose yards and scoring three total touchdowns.

Luke Nickel, QB, Milton: The star of the state championship finale in the Class 7A title game was the Miami commitment. Nickel led Milton to a 31-21 victory over Walton, throwing for 201 yards and finishing with two touchdowns, one through the air and on the ground.
