Photos: Edwardsville wins rematch with O'Fallon in Illinois Class 8A first-round matchup
There were five upsets in the first round of the Illinois Class 8A playoffs and No. 22 Edwardsville's 43-36 controversial victory at No. 11 O'Fallon on Saturday night figures to be one that will be talked about for years.
Edwardsville (7-3), which advances to face sixth-seeded Loyola Academy (9-1) in the second round, avenged a 32-31 loss at O'Fallon in Week 4 where the Tigers blew a double-figure lead in the final minutes.
O'Fallon once again rallied from a double-figure deficit late on Saturday night, but this time Edwardsville was able to take back the lead with 1 minute 43 seconds on a 5-yard touchdown run by De'Shawn Larson.
The Tigers held on in the final minute after a controversial sequence where the officials ruled O'Fallon had turned the ball on downs after a third-down play came up short of a first down.
Edwardsville quarterback Jake Curry tossed four touchdown passes, including three to Daion Gaston. Gaston also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
