Photos: Simeon edges Kenwood in overtime thriller to win Chicago Public League boys basketball title
CHICAGO – Throughout this remarkable final season coaching the top-ranked Simeon boys basketball team, retiring coach Robert Smith has repeatedly emphasized his goals of the Wolverines focusing on winning city and state championships.
Simeon checked off the first goal on Saturday with a thrilling 72-64 overtime victory over Kenwood Academy in the the Chicago Public League Tournament championship game at Credit Union 1 Arena.
The No. 1 team in the SBLive Illinois Power 25 boys basketball rankings, Simeon (26-3) led by 20 points entering the fourth quarter before third-ranked Kenwood (23-6) surged back to tie the game by outscoring the Wolverines 29-9 in the final quarter.
Simeon dominated the overtime period by outscoring the Broncos 10-2.
Wes Rubin led Simeon with 21 points, while his twin brother Miles added 15. Jalen Griffith and Sam Lewis added 11 points apiece.
Kansas State recruit Dai Dai Ames led Kenwood with 22 points, while Isaiah Green added 11 and Chris Riddle scored 10.
