High school basketball playoffs: Start dates in every state, 2023 bracket updates

We are now less than a month away from postseason basketball in the Mitten State, and competition is heating up in both boys and girls basketball.

We’ve got a lot of good action in the coming days, so let’s take a look at the top games in boys and girls basketball this week.

Boys basketball

Carson City-Crystal (14-4) vs. Blanchard Montabella (16-2), 2/20

Let’s kick off this week with Carson City-Crystal hitting the road to take on Blanchard Montabella on Monday. This one should be fun. Both of these teams are making a push toward the playoffs and this is the time to get hot. Whoever grinds out this win will get some good momentum going into the final weeks of the regular season.

Ann Arbor Huron (17-1) vs. Ann Arbor Skyline (11-7), 2/21

The last edition of this rivalry game went down to the wire, ending with a heroic buzzer beater for Huron to beat the Eagles. Let’s hope we get another classic in this one.

Huron has been great this season with only one loss on the schedule, but Skyline showed last time that it has what it takes to hang with the River Rats. Will the Eagles pull off the upset this time around?

Munising (17-1) vs. Powers North Central (14-3), 2/21

Munising is another team with only one blemish on its schedule, but it’ll be hard to stay a one-loss team this week heading to Powers North Central. This game is sure to get both of these teams ready for what the playoffs are like.

The atmosphere should be rocking for this one, and if Munising can win in a road environment like this, it can win anywhere.

Hart (18-0) vs. Newaygo (11-7), 2/22

There’s always a target on your back if you’re undefeated, especially this late into the season. That’s the case for Hart. The season has been perfect and it is fighting for it to be that way for as long as possible.

As for Newaygo, opportunities for a win like this don’t come around very often. Everybody wants to be able to end a perfect record, and that is the chance that Newaygo has later this week.

Standish-Sterling (16-0) vs. Millington (14-4), 2/24

Pretty much the same theme here as undefeated Standish-Sterling hits the road to play a talented Millington team. This could be Standish-Sterling’s toughest test and the biggest threat to its perfect record.

Both of these teams should make some noise during March, but it starts now. A win like this can have a lasting effect into the postseason.

Girls basketball

Utica Ford (17-2) vs. Madison Heights Bishop Foley (16-4), 2/20

At this point in the season for both of these talented teams, it can be easy to start to shift focus towards the postseason. However, there are still plenty of meaningful games before we reach that point, like this one.

Both of these teams are more than capable of making a lot of noise come March, and I’m sure that will show during this battle between the two schools. Keep your eyes on this one this Monday.

Caro (17-2) vs. North Branch (18-2), 2/21

It’s always fun when two teams of similar and great talent square off, and that’s what we have with this matchup. It really doesn’t get any better.

The North Branch home crowd will certainly be rowdy and that could give the home team a slight advantage, but it should be a very competitive game. Expect this game to come down to the wire and it could go either team’s way.

Dewitt (18-2) vs. Holt (17-3), 2/21

This game may just be the most interesting that we have this week. With the close proximity between these two schools, the stakes are always higher. The fact that these two teams are as talented as they are goes a long way, too.

The intensity of this game is going to be at an all-time high, and because of that, this game will certainly have a postseason feel to it. I can’t wait for this one.

Grand Rapids West Catholic (19-0) vs. Hamilton (14-6), 2/21

We’ve discussed Grand Rapids West Catholic on these lists a lot because of its perfect record and numerous challenges standing in its way. Here we are again talking about that squad because it still sits undefeated at 19-0, and yet another tough test stands in the way of a perfect season.

West Catholic has answered the call every time so far, but will it be able to do it again on the road this week at Hamilton? At 14-6, Hamilton is quietly having a very nice year. Maybe it will be the team that finally takes down West Catholic.

Colon (16-4) vs. Hillsdale Academy (16-3), 2/23

Our last matchup of the week pits Colon against Hillsdale Academy. Closing out the season on a high note headed into the postseason is extremely important, and that all starts right now.

In basketball, it’s often the case that the best team from the whole season doesn’t win it all, but just the team that gets hot at the right time. Winning a game like this can get a team hot at the right time.
