Park Hill South’s Maddie Kubicki, Fort Osage’s Haley Ward achieve rare feat at Missouri wrestling championships

Kubicki, Ward capture fourth state titles

Park Hill South’s Maddie Kubicki and Fort Osage’s Haley Ward both won their fourth state championships and finished off undefeated senior seasons on Saturday in the Class 2 finals of the 2023 MSHSAA Wrestling Championships.

But Kubicki still has bragging rights.

The Park Hill South standout finished her four-year high school wrestling career with a perfect record of 157 wins and no losses.

Ward, meanwhile, capped off her outstanding career at 172-1.

Ward’s one loss? It came against Kubicki on Dec. 4, 2020 – when they were sophomores – in the second round of the 143-pound weight class at the Park Hills Girls Scramble.

It was the only meeting between the two standouts in their four-year varsity careers as both competed in different weight classes. Kubicki won the title at 143 that year, while Ward won at 132.

Kubicki is the second girls wrestler in MSHSAA history to finish her career undefeated with four championships, following Faith Cole of Lafayette (Wildwood) who achieved that feat a year ago.

Future four-time champions?

Two girls (Kubick and Ward) and two boys (Palmyra’s Collin Arch and Whitfield’s AJ Rallo) joined the four-time champions club at Mizzou Arena last week.

Three wrestlers put themselves in position to chase that achievement next season as juniors who won their third straight state championships: Liberty’s Christopher Coates and Gavin Linsman and Whitfield’s Porter Matecki.

Coates won the Class 4 title at 138 pounds and finished his junior campaign with a 28-1 record while helping the Blue Jays win their fourth straight state championship. Linsman, who transferred from Whitfield to Liberty for his junior year, won the Class 4 title at 144 and went 41-4 for the season.

Matecki, whose teammate Rallo achieved the feat on Saturday, took home the Class 3 title at 126 pounds and finished 41-2 for the season.
