Missouri is making a high-level effort to keep its high school star athletes at home in college.

The state Legislature this week passed a change to its NIL legislation with Missouri House Bill 417.

From a high school sports perspective, the most significant effect of the revised NIL law would allow recruits playing in Missouri to reach NIL deals and earn endorsement money as soon as they sign with in-state colleges.

The bill is awaiting Gov. Mike Parson’s signature.

“It’s a huge deal for universities when they’re recruiting kids, especially in their home state,” Mit Winter, a sports attorney at Kennyhertz Perry LLC in Kansas City, told KMBC 9. “Missouri obviously has a lot of talented high school athletes that in the past have gone to other schools. So, Missouri would obviously like to do what they can to keep those athletes in the state of Missouri.”
