Texas high school football team honors student who died after cross country race

A North Texas high school football game held a moment of silence Friday as a community mourned a student who died after collapsing at the finish line of a cross country meet last week.
Chisholm Trail (Texas) sophomore Angel Hernandez collapsed shortly after finishing his race at the Oct. 13 District 3-6A meet.
He was treated immediately by medical and rushed to a hospital, where he died "about an hour" later, WFAA News in Dallas reported.
Hernandez's cause of death is still being investigated by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner, the station reports.
A GoFundMe started to help Hernandez's family cover funeral expenses has surpassed $10,692 as of Friday night.
Witnesses told the news station they saw Hernandez collapse after crossing the finish line. He was helped to the water station and collapsed again.
A trainer noticed Hernandez' pulse plummet low, eventually to zero. Officials administered CPR and called 911, reported MileSplit.
Chisholm Trail coach head coach Joe Gifford told MileSplit Hernandez set a personal best thanks to a late kick in the district race, and that time helped the Rangers force a tie for the final regional qualifying spot.
"He was the kind of student-athlete you wanted," retired Chisholm Trail High School track coach Brent Brevardt told WFAA News.. "He worked hard and cared about the teammates. But then he also acted right in school and took care of his grades."
Chisholm Trail is located in Fort Worth. Its football team lost to Paschal at home Friday.
The Cinco Peso Press, Chisholm Trail's student newspaper, memorialized Hernandez with an obituary on Tuesday.
