Torrey Nowell named new football coach at Durham Hillside

Torrey Nowell didn't stay off the job market very long.

Nowell was recently named the new football coach at Durham Hillside a few days after stepping down from the same role at New Bern, where he spent his last four seasons.

Nowell led the Bears to the NCHSAA 4-A state championship last season to cap a perfect 16-0 record. He finished his four-year career at New Bern with a record of 43-7 from 2019-2022.

New Bern defeated Grimsley 40-28 in the state championship game without attempting a single pass. The Bears' triple option offense racked up 396 rushing yards in the win.

Before going to New Bern, Nowell was the coach at Pamlico County, finishing there with a 30-24 record and a trip to the 1-A state title game in 2018.

Hillside finished 13-1 last season and advanced to the fourth round of the 4-A playoffs before losing to Millbrook.
