Jesuit 54, Sherwood 41

For the Jesuit girls basketball team, when it comes to the upcoming Class 6A state tournament, the objective is plain, clear and simply stated.

“We’re looking to win,” Crusaders sophomore forward Kendra Hicks said with a smile.

To achieve that goal, Jesuit first had to earn a spot in the eight-team field.

Although it certainly wasn’t easy, the Crusaders did just that.

Jesuit clinched a spot in the state tournament by fighting its way past a persistent Sherwood squad in a state playoff second-round contest Saturday at Jesuit High School.

“It means a lot,” said Jesuit junior guard Emma Sixta, who led all scorers with 23 points. “We’ve been working really hard as a team and I feel like we’ve had a really good season, and to get to the Chiles Center (site of the Class 6A state tournament) means a lot. It’s a big thing. It’s really cool.”

“This just really solidifies our connection and our teamwork together,” Hicks said. “This shows that we come to compete every game, and we just cherish our time on court together.”

Jesuit, the Metro League runner-up, improved to 24-3. The Crusaders will face Barlow in a Class 6A state tournament quarterfinal at 8:15 p.m. Thursday at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center.

“We just have to keep fighting, keep pushing, working hard and focusing on our fundamentals, and compete every game,” Hicks said.

“Barlow is obviously a really good team, but I think that if we bring the energy that we brought today, and if we work together, we’ll be fine,” Sixta said.

Sixta scored 12 of her game-high 23 points from the free throw line. She had three steals and three assists. Hicks had 15 points to go with nine rebounds and two steals. Junior guard Avery Edwards had 11 points, four steals and four rebounds.

“I was just really excited,” Hicks said. “I knew it was a big thing for our team, and a big thing for our coaches, too, and it was just an exciting feeling. It was so fun. I’m so excited. We’re all so excited.”

“It was really great to know that we made it this far, and to have another chance to keep the team together,” Sixta said.

Junior Tessa Randall and senior Carly Hick each scored two points for the Crusaders, and junior Audrey Kent had one.

Sherwood standout sophomore post Ava Heiden had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. She had two steals. Senior Mandie Jensen had eight points and two steals. Laney Snelling, Sophia Carleton and Keeley McCaulley each scored four points. The top-ranked Beavers got off to a fast start, and they never looked back.

Beaverton, after jumping out to an 11-1 first-quarter lead, powered its way over Metro League rival Westview in a game played at Beaverton High School.

“We played very solid team defense and shared the ball well offensively,” Beaverton coach Kathy Naro said.

“It was an overall tremendous team win,” Kathy Naro said.

West Linn, with senior Alana Molden scoring on a short-range banker, coming off a pass from senior Isabella McVicker, with just 1.1 seconds showing on the clock, earned a one-point victory over Cleveland in a game played at West Linn High School.
