The smaller classifications took center stage Friday night, with the finals for the Class 4A, 3A and 2A/1A boys and 4A/3A/2A/1A girls taking place at the OSAA wrestling state championships at Portland’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Here’s a look at some of the top highlights and memorable performances from the 77th edition of the tournament.

106-pound finalists help lead Crook County's championship run

Crook County ended its time in the 4A ranks by reclaiming the state title for the first time since 2018 and the program's eighth overall.

The evening kicked off with an all-Cowboys final at 106 pounds, with sophomore Casen Villastrigo beating freshman Tanner Brumble in a 19-7 major decision.

“It was expected,” Villastrigo said of the team title. “We didn’t have any doubt.”

Villastrigo also had no doubt about winning his gold medal despite having to miss last month’s Reser’s Tournament of Champions because of a left triceps injury (Brumble finished second in his absence) and losing to Brumble in the district final.

“It was definitely bothering me prior to the state tournament,” Villastrigo said. “But once I got here, it was definitely feeling a little better.”

gavin sandoval crook county
Crook County's Gavin Sandoval / René Ferrán

Sandoval overcomes another knee injury to earn third title for Cowboys

A year ago, Crook County senior Gavin Sandoval returned from a torn ACL in his right knee just in time to win his second state championship.

So, he knew what he faced when he tore the ACL and meniscus in the other knee at the Reno Tournament of Champions in December.

“I was like, ‘I’m just going to wrestle on it. I can’t go through that again,’” Sandoval said. “I’m just going to do what I can.”

He aggravated the injury at the Oregon Classic, so he shut things down until the district meet, riding the bike and doing what he could to remain in fighting shape.

The work paid off Friday night as Sandoval returned to the Coliseum and won his third title, overcoming an early deficit against Marshfield’s Aryan Wright to pin the Pirates senior with eight seconds left in the second round.

“This means a lot. It just shows that hard work pays off,” Sandoval said. “Faith in my hard work, faith in the Lord. At times, it gets frustrating, but I know what I’m capable of, and I’ve got the right support around me to help me overcome my injuries and setbacks to get to where I want to be.”

Barrett becomes first Philomath wrestler in past four decades to go back-to-back

Philomath junior Riley Barrett didn’t know he’d made a bit of school history with his 14-0 major decision over Pendleton’s Vance Nelson in the 150 final.

The victory made Barrett, who went undefeated in winning at 150 last year, just the second Philomath wrestler to win two state titles. Kevin Sterba is the only other Warrior to win twice, doing so in 1982-83.

He did so wrestling against doctor’s orders. He suffered a severe right ankle injury that his doctor and team trainer advised was season-ending.

“But I just thought to myself, 'I’m just going to have to get through it, man,'” Barrett said. “I had to dig really deep for this.”

After medically forfeiting his final two matches at Reser’s after a semifinal loss to Bend’s Eric Larwin, his only live action was at the district meet, where he didn’t give up a point, and this weekend at state.

“I mean, it’s really surreal that I’m standing here,” Barrett said. “I need to shout out my mom, my dad, everybody in my support system just believing in me.”

Sandoval and Barrett were among the five wrestlers who repeated as champions Friday night. La Grande’s Tommy Belding (157), Scappoose’s Maverick Heimbuck (165) and Sweet Home’s Jesse Landtroop (120) also won their second titles, with Landtroop winning a rematch with Belding’s teammate, Bragen Anderson, 9-2 to put himself halfway toward becoming a four-time champion.

Harrisburg's Buzzard one step from joining four-time champions club

While four wrestlers in the 3A meet joined the four-time state champions club, another took his third step toward becoming a four-timer next year.

Harrisburg junior Brody Buzzard fended off a stiff challenge from Vale’s Kase Schaffeld in the 175 final, pulling away late for a 13-2 major decision to add a third title to the football championship he won with 4A Marist Catholic in the fall.

“Really, what the similarities are between football and wrestling, it’s about hard work,” said Buzzard, who wrestles for his hometown Eagles because Marist Catholic does not offer wrestling.

“It’s all that time we’ve been putting in the offseason. It’s all the extra work when nobody else is doing it. And when you get the success, it really makes it a lot of fun.”

Buzzard seized control of the final by taking down Schaffeld with 13 seconds left in the second period, pushing his lead to 9-2. He recorded one final takedown in the final half-minute and rode out the clock to put himself one win from joining Dax Bennett as the only four-timers in Harrisburg history.

“I’m on that path, on that track,” Buzzard said. “This year, I’ve just been so grateful.”

La Pine's Flack goes overtime to win battle of returning champions

Befitting a matchup of returning state champions, La Pine senior Riley Flack needed sudden-victory overtime to get past Harrisburg sophomore Andrei Donyari 9-6 in the 120 final.

Donyari worked an escape with three seconds left to force the extra period after he trailed 4-0 after two rounds, took a 5-4 lead with a takedown and two near-fall points, then saw Flack reverse him with 57 seconds left in the match.

Finally, Flack took down Donyari with 20 seconds left in the overtime period and credited a drill the Hawks work every day in practice.

“We do this thing called ‘gas,’” Flack said. “When you don’t feel like you’ve got nothing left, you’ve still got to wrestle a 30-second bump, and that set me up perfectly for this match. I just had to keep pushing through.”

Joining Flack as repeat champions Friday were Warrenton heavyweight Kaison Smith, who beat Harrisburg’s Hunter Langham in the ultimate tiebreaker, and Burns sophomore Cannon Kemper, who is halfway to four-timer status after his second-round pin of Willamina’s Devin Huston.

Class 2A/1A boys

harley hardison lowell
Lowell's Harley Hardison / René Ferrán

Seek, and ye shall find: Lowell's Hardison wins third title by downing two-time champion

As a freshman three years ago at Culver, Lowell’s Harley Hardison fell in the 106 final to Illinois Valley’s Mike Miller during Miller's run to becoming a four-time state champion.

Hardison used that defeat as fuel the rest of his time in a Red Devils singlet, ending his career with a 13-4 major decision over two-time champion Taylor Parsons of Grant Union/Prairie City to become Lowell’s first three-time titlist since Thomas Harvey won three in a row from 2015-17.

“My goal my freshman year was to be a state champion, but things got sidetracked,” Hardison said. “I got hurt, came back, still made it to the finals, lost to Michael Miller, a great competitor, great guy. I’m great friends with him.

“And looking back at it, I think in the moment, it was more of a failure to me than right now. Because that loss allowed me to work harder and put my head down and get it to where I can get these three state titles.”

hardison lowell

Hardison won at 120 pounds each of the past two years and wrestled at 132 most of the season, but all along, he knew he wanted a chance to wrestle Parsons, a junior who hoped to become the program’s first four-time champion.

“It’s been in my mind all year long,” said Hardison, who will wrestle for the University of Jamestown (N.D.). “This year, I didn’t care that I was going to win a state title. I wanted to seek out the best competition possible, and so I saw that he was at 126 still, so I knew I wanted to come down, give him a good match and wrestle him.”

Illinois Valley's Conn, Heppner's Brown cap undefeated seasons with state titles

zachary brown heppner

Two wrestlers capped undefeated seasons with state championships Friday night.

Illinois Valley junior James Conn, who was Miller’s teammate and final opponent when he won the third of his four titles, took home his second gold medal and finished 25-0 with a 16-0 technical fall over Colton’s Justin Kilman in the 120 bracket.

At 157, Heppner senior Zachary Brown not only reached his first final, he completed a 40-0 season with a second-period pin of Gold Beach’s Trevor Lasater.

Notes

Joining Conn as a repeat state champion Friday night was Oakridge senior Kayden Tiller, who finished 43-2 with a second-period pin of Lowell’s Henry Coiner in the 150 final.

Elgin sophomore Landyn Fincher (113) and Nestucca senior Zak Chatelain (132) won their first titles after finishing second at last year’s state meet.

Mazama's Henderson completes Cinderella run to 235-pound crown

It looked like midnight would come an hour early for Mazama junior Lizabeth Henderson’s Cinderella run through the 235-pound bracket.

Earlier in the day, Henderson knocked off top seed Breanna Meek of North Valley, pinning the senior 93 seconds into their semifinal match.

In the final, she trailed three-time champion Mallory Lusco of Grant Union 3-0 after conceding a stalling penalty point with 10 seconds left. All Lusco needed to do was run out the clock to become the first girl to win four OSAA titles since girls wrestling became an official sport in 2019.

But off the whistle, Lusco lunged for a leg as Henderson backed away, losing her balance, and Henderson pounced. She jumped on top of Lusco, taking her straight to her back, with the referee immediately beginning a count. It reached two as the final second ticked off, giving Henderson the two points she needed to spring the biggest surprise of the championships.

“She just got knocked off her base, and I was able to capitalize,” Henderson said, still catching her breath and soaking in the moment.

“I’m so blessed. The feeling I have right now is astronomical. I’ve never had a feeling like this. I feel completely on top of the world.”

In just her second season wrestling, Henderson became the first Viking to win a state title since Josh Hammers won at 182 eight years ago. And while her dream of one day making the Olympics is still a long way off, on this night, anything seemed possible.

“I just feel incredible,” she said. “I feel unstoppable. Honestly, I just got lucky, but I was able to capitalize on her mistake. It just comes down to who worked harder in the season, who wants it more. I think I wanted it more.”

oakridge keller
Oakridge's Vanessa Keller / René Ferrán

Oakridge's Keller holds on to beat returning champion, keep four-timer hopes alive

The 110 final pitted two returning champions who still harbored hopes of becoming a four-timer.

And for the fourth time this season, it was Oakridge junior Vanessa Keller who got the better of Harrisburg sophomore Paxton Steele, earning a 7-3 decision to move within one title of becoming Oakridge’s first four-time champion.

“That’s the goal,” Keller said, adding that the moment hadn’t quite hit her yet. “It’s still like, every time I hear it, I’m like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe that.’”

Keller acknowledged being a little nervous going up against a fellow champion in the final, “but I’ve wrestled her before, and we’ve been off and on,” she said. “I knew it could go either way, so I was leaving it all on the mat.”

With 15 seconds left, it looked like it would be Steele who would emerge victorious from this clash of champions, appearing to score a takedown for a 6-4 lead. Instead, officials ruled the takedown didn’t finish until both were out of bounds, leaving Keller in the lead and Eagles coaches and fans raging.

Keller took no chances on the restart, taking down Steele for the title-clinching points.

“I was like, ‘I gotta move. I gotta take a shot,’” she said. “I’m only up one, and I’ve already gotten called for stalling, so I needed another shot in there to be safe.”

St. Helens' Pense halfway to four-timer goal after dominant defense of 170 title

St. Helens sophomore Jadyn Pense made quick work of her title defense at 170, pinning Addison Josi of Tillamook in 65 seconds to move halfway to becoming a four-time champion.

Pense, who started wrestling at 4 years old, improved to 47-1 this season, with her only loss to David Douglas’ McKenzie Mills, a 6A/5A semifinalist at 190.

Pense felt a bit of pressure as a defending champion, knowing that “everyone was probably expecting me to win. But I just told myself I was going to come in here and try my best. That’s all that matters.

“And just knowing that I won it one more time, it’s kind of a relief.”

coquille paisley morrison

Notes

Perhaps the most heartbreaking final was at 125, where Sweet Home junior Bailey Chafin hoped to join Keller as a three-time champion. But early in her match against Nyssa’s Abigail Mardock, Chafin aggravated a knee injury as she pressed for a takedown. After receiving treatment, she tried to continue, but the knee buckled again, and she had to be carried off the mat in tears by her coaches.

Mardock joined sophomore Lorien Bowns (100) as their school’s first girls champions. Also winning their school's first girls titles were Burns ninth-graders Hadley Gunderson (115) and Megan Weil (190), Coquille freshman Paisley Morrison (140), Creswell senior Chantell Noffsinger (145) and North Bend senior Kaylianna Mazzucchi (155) — with Morrison (19-0) and Mazzucchi (25-0) capping unbeaten seasons.
