The Shiner Comanches (15-0) play the Muenster Hornets (13-2) in the UIL Class 2A Division 2 championship at AT&T Stadium on Thursday.

Recap

For a second consecutive year, the Muenster Hornets are celebrating a Texas UIL Class 2A-Division 2 state championship, at the expense of the Shriner Comanches.

On Thursday morning at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Muenster (14-2) shutout Shriner (15-1), 28-0, with a suffocating defensive effort and a steady, if not relentless, offensive effort led by quarterback Casey Carney and wide receiver Garrett Hess.

Carney rushed for the game’s opening touchdown and then found Hess on three different TD tosses. Carney and senior Nolan Peel had their way on the ground, as the Muenster offensive line controlled the trenches and helped the Hornets keep the clock rolling at a very steady pace.

Carney, who’s dad Brady is the team’s head coach, had 162 yards passing 79-yards rushing, and was named the game's Offensive MVP for a second consecutive year. Muenster senior defensive lineman Rhett Waterscheid, who was a constant presence in the Shiner backfield, was named the game's Defensive MVP.

“We played our best football game we’ve played the last three weeks,” said Coach Carney following the contest. “Defensively, we were spot on. We played a good football game. We played with a lot of energy. I was worried we might be a little complacent coming back, but I didn’t see that at all. Our guys were fired up and ready to go.”
