Top 2022 marks in Washington high school girls track and field: Special day for South Kitsap relay quartet
South Kitsap High girls track and field coach Paul Zimmer thought he had the ideal meet circled to go school-record hunting.
It was the prestigious Jesuit Twilight Relays in Oregon on April 29.
Little did Zimmer know, not only was the quartet of Savannah Kambich, Marissa Crane, Elise Hopper and Ella Hopper up for the task - they registered one of those once-in-a-lifetime showings.
In that meet, the same Wolves' group not only set school records in the 4x100 relay (49.29 seconds), the 4x200 relay (1:42.71) and 4x400 relay (3:56.73) - they took the state's top times in each of those relays.
Richland grabbed the 4x100 relay lead a week later at 49.19, pushing the Wolves to No. 2.
"They are four girls in that group who missed 11/2 track seasons, so they've put a lot of work in the offseason," Zimmer said. "They were hungry to get it."
The relay participants:
* Kambich is the leadoff runner in all three relays. Zimmer said she gets off to good starts and "puts us in good position." Her best individual race is the 200 meters.
* Because Crane is a taller runner, she is a good fit on the straightaway leg. Zimmer praises her intelligence and ability to take a clean handoff. Her best individual race is the 400.
* Of the four runners, Elise Hopper is the newcomer to the relays. She feels most comfortable in the third leg, Zimmer said, handing off to her sister. She runs the 200 and 400 equally well.
* Ella Hopper is the school's most talented all-around track athlete with great closing speed. Zimmer said she has a "sixth sense" in when to make a move to go win the race. She is a great 400 runner - and ranks No. 1 in the 300 hurdles as well.
Ninth grader Lauren Laws, a standout middle-distance runner, is the alternate and could see action in the relays moving forward, Zimmer said.
"The girls' team goal is to be a podium team (at the Class 4A state meet)," Zimmer said. "There are a lot of moving parts, and a lot of things have to fall in place."
