PUYALLUP - Mercer Island finally broke through.

In their fifth state title game appearance the Islanders upset Lakeside 3-1 on Saturday to capture the 2022 WIAA Class 3A Boys Soccer State Championship. It's the first boys soccer state title in school history for Mercer Island.

The 12th-seeded Islanders pulled off four consecutive upsets to capture the title, with the championship victory coming over 2nd-seeded Lakeside.

David Thomas had a goal and an assist for the Islanders. Thomas' goal in the 78th minute proved to be the game-winner and he assisted on the final goal in injury time which was booted home by Kaleb Rawson. Brady Gilroy scored the first goal for Mercer Island.
