Camas (Washington) nearly upsets Mater Dei (California) in Portland girls basketball tournament

PORTLAND - For the second consecutive year, the Camas girls basketball team nearly pulled off a stunning upset at the Portland Holiday Classic.

Riley Sanz missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer and the Mater Dei Monarchs escaped with a 58-56 win over Camas in the Open Division of the Portland Holiday Classic.

Camas senior Addison Harris led all scorers with 27 points as the Papermakers built a double-digit lead in the first half. But the Monarchs came roaring back in the second half to pull out the victory. The Monarchs came into the game ranked No. 16 in the country in the SBLive/Sports Illustrated Power 25.

Emily Shaw led Mater Dei with 20 points and Jenessa Cotton added 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Junior point guard Keirra Thompson had 11 points and 8 assists for Camas, and Reagan Jamison added 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Last season Camas upset nationally-ranked Clackamas 70-68 in the semifinals of the Holiday Classic.

The Open Division is loaded with five nationally-ranked teams: No. 4 Archbishop Mitty (California), No. 15 Etiwanda (California), No. 16 Mater Dei (California) and No. 19 DeSoto (Texas).
