Wrestling roundup: Grappler Fall Classic & Journeymen Tournament were stacked

New York’s Casper Stewart surprise Pennsylvania’s Vince Bouzakis and West Virginia’s Gunner Andrick upsets Florida’s Evan Solis; Wyoming Seminary grapplers dominate Journeymen with nine finalists and six champions; Unranked Jason Kwaak pins Gabriel Bouyssou

In Kalamazoo, Michigan at the Wings Event Center, the 2023 Grappler Fall Classic took place on Saturday for high school wrestlers. Illinois dominated the championship count with four titlelists, while California, Michigan, New York, and Tennessee crowned two champions apiece.

At 125, Seth Mendoza (No. 5 at 120) pinned Jake Crapps (Class, GA – No. 12 at 126) in the third period at the 5:09 mark. Mendoza's Mount Carmel teammate Colin Kelly (No. 20 at 175) won the 171-pound title with a 3-1 decision over Dom Bambinelli (No. 8 at 165) from Mill Creek, Georgia.

Tyler Guerra (St. Charles East, No. 17 at 138) was at 140lbs and used a 4-1 decision over Blake Cosby of Dundee, Michigan for his victory. Illinois’ final champ was Matthew Jens from Grayslake Central who won an all-Illinois final 6-4 over Libertyville’s Matthew Kubas.

California's two champs were Clovis’ Nikade Zinkin (130) and Oakdale’s Emilio Johnson (285). Zinkin (No. 23 at 126) won the 130-pound title with a 7-3 victory over Christian Fretwell from Lake Gibson, Florida. Johnson posted a 7-1 decision of Tanner Craft (Leslie, Michigan) for his crown.

Michigan's champions came at one of the lowest weights, 98lbs, where Jarrett Smith pinned Teequavious Mills from Stone Mountain, Georgia at the 5:03 mark of the match. 215lber Conner Bercume from Detroit Central Catholic also used a pin, 3:47, to bring home his gold over Caden Brewer from Brownsburg, Indiana.

New York's champions were back-to-back at 145 and 152. Cameron Catrabone from Williamsville edged Illinois’ Jayden Robinson (Homewood Flossmoor) 2-1 at 145lbs. Both Catrabone and Robinson are currently ranked at 150 with Catrabone being number two and Robinson being number 19.

Attica's Casper Stewart shocked Vince Bouzakis (Wyoming Seminary, Pennsylvania) with a second-period fall, 49 seconds into the frame, 2:49. Bouzakis is ranked number three at 150 while Stewart is ranked No. 20 at 144.

Tennessee’s JoJo Uhorchuk, who wrestles for Signal Mountain, won a close one with Grey Burnett from Perrysburg, Ohio 2-1. Uhorchuk is ranked #14 at 113 while Burnett is the No. 2 106-pounder in our current rankings. At 160 pounds, Maximus Norman (Dobyns Bennett, No. 22 at 157) beat Kendrick Hodge (No. 14 at 165) from Somerset, Florida, 10-3.

West Virginia's Gunner Andrick pulled off a major upset at 135 pounds with a 3-1 victory over Elvis Solis (South Dade, Florida). Andrick is ranked 24th at 132 pounds while Solis is our No. 10 144-pounder. The 119-pound crown was won by Blair Academy's Tyler DeKraker 11-3 over Antonio Mills from Stone Mountain, Georgia. DeKraker is ranked No. 15 at 120 while Mills sets in the 22nd spot at 120.

The final champion hails from Iowa and is in the honorable mention section at 106 pounds. Gavin Landers (Denver) captured the 105-pound championship with a 4-2 decision of Anthony Garza from California.

Journeymen Fall Classic

The Journeyman Fall Classic unfolded on Sunday at the Impact Center in Halfmoon, New York. The wrestlers started action in pools and then moved into a bracket based on their pool performance. Some of the weight classes were smaller and just went with a round-robin competition and no bracket. We are going to focus on the A division where the stars were wrestling.

Wyoming Seminary dominated the action with six champions. While there was no team score tallied and team affiliations were generally loose with some of the Seminary wrestlers competing under the X-Calibur moniker, nonetheless, six grapplers from the Pennsylvania powerhouse found their way to the top of the podium.

At 106, freshman Shamus Reagan, who is ranked No. 12 defeated Kole Davidheiser from Faith Christian Academy in Pennsylvania, 6-4. Davidheiser is in the honorable mention section at 106. At 125, Nate Desmond blanked Lake Highland Prep’s Charlie Desena, 9-0. Desmond is number six at 120 in the preseason rankings. Luke Lilledahl, our No. 1 126lber, competed at 130lbs where he beat Daniel Aranda from Lake Highland Prep (Florida), 5-1, in the finals.

Matthew Botello took the 135-pound championship with a 2-1 victory over Tahir Parkins from Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Botello is No. 10 and Parkins No. 11 in our 132-pound rankings. No. 2 Joe Sealey received a forfeit from Paul Ognissanti (Blair Academy, New Jersey, No. 16 at 165) for his 160lb championship. At 182, Dom Federici, who is the number 25 175lber, edged Preston Marchesseault (Ponaganset, Rhode Island) 2-1. To reach the finals, Marchesseault used an identical 2-1 score over Malvern Prep's Duncan Christensen (HM at 175) in the semis.

In addition to those six champions, Seminary had three other finalists who settled for silver Nikos Filipos (111), Dale Corbin (118), and Nolan Liess (152).

California had the next-highest champion count at three. In an interesting twist, all three compete for St. John Bosco. At 111 pounds Sean Wilcox used a 3-1 decision over Filipos for his gold. To reach the finals, Wilcox beat Nathan Rioux (Avon, Indiana) 3-0 in the semifinals. Rioux is currently ranked number 21 at 113, while Wilcox is unranked.

The No. 4 150lber in the nation, Grigor Cholakyan, used a 13-6 decision of Liess from Seminary to capture his glory. The heavyweight champion was Nicholas Sahakian who posted a second-period pen of Gabe Garibaldi (Iona Prep, New York) for his crown. The number six heavyweight did not see a bracket as his weight class only had four wrestlers, so they did a round-robin competition.

New Jersey posted two titlists with August Hibler putting a 3-1 decision over Jason Kwaak on the 145lb bracket. Hibler is the No. 12 144lber in the nation. The No. 11 144-pounder Gabriel Bouyssou from Scituate, Rhode Island was pinned in the semifinals by the unranked Kwaak in 1:30. New Jersey’s other champion was Josh Anthony (195), a postgraduate from Blair Academy, who edged his former teammate and National Prep Champion, Peter Snyder, 2-1. Snyder is currently ranked No. 25 at 190.

At 118lbs Lake Highland Prep’s Ethan Rivera won a 2-1 decision over Seminary’s Corbin. The 140lb champion was Chase Van Hoven from Brooke Point, Virginia, who is an honorable mention at 144. Van Hoven posted a 7-2 victory over Jack Nelson from Westonka, Minnesota, who is No. 14 at 138.

Rhode Island’s Isael Perez, who wrestles for Hope High School, claimed the 170lb title with a 5-2 win over Brian Heard (Abington Heights, Pennsylvania). Perez, who is ranked No. 24 at 175, avenged a loss to Omer Barak (Lake Highland Prep), handing him a 3-0 loss in the quarters. Barak had previously beaten him 6-3 at the NHSCA Junior Nationals. Heard defeated Gage LaPlante (St. Francis, New York) 6-3 in the semis. Barak is No. 24 at 165, LaPlante is No. 18 at 175, while Heard is currently unranked.

The 225-pound title was a battle of Minnesotans with No. 16 Cy Kruse (Totino-Grace) putting a 7-4 victory over No. 24 Quinlan Morgan (Mounds View) in the books. In the semifinals, Morgan decked No. 12 Michael Mocco (Cardinal Gibbons, Florida) in 33 seconds for a major upset.
