Philadelphia Phillies Linked to Blockbuster Trade with Cardinals

The Philadelphia Phillies have been linked to a blockbuster trade with the St. Louis Cardinals before the MLB Trade Deadline.

The Philadelphia Phillies are in full buy mode ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline on Aug. 1.

Sitting a half-game up in the Wild Card standings, the front office is looking to add pieces to help get them back into the World Series.

FanGraphs put together a trade package for the Phillies where they receive the reigning NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt from the St. Louis Cardinals.

With Philadelphia's normal first baseman Rhys Hoskins out for the year with a torn ACL, they've been rotating different players throughout the season to play the position.

Bryce Harper is currently the first base as he continues to recover from his offseason elbow surgery preventing him from playing his normal outfield role.

Goldschmidt would certainly be a welcome addition for the Phillies. He's hitting .280/.369/.470 with 18 home runs and 55 RBI this season.

To acquire the right handed slugger, FanGraphs has Philadelphia giving up three of their top 10 prospects. Outfielders Johan Rojas and Carlos De La Cruz would be headed to the Cardinals, along with infielder Hao-Yu Lee.

The former MVP would provide a big boost for the middle of the lineup that has been struggling without Hoskins in the lineup.

Giving up that much for Goldschmidt would be a big price for the aging veteran. With the slugger under contract for one more season after 2023, there would be a log jam at first base with Hoskins coming back.

The front office has been clear they are targeting outfielders ahead of the deadline. With Harper proving he can play first base, giving up that many assets for an aging first baseman feels like a neutral trade.
