The Brooklyn Nets have traded Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, and draft compensation. The deal was first reported by The Athletic's Shams Charania. The blockbuster trade has taken the NBA world by storm, as many felt both the LA Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers would be the strongest bidders for Irving, but it is the Mavericks who will now pair the star guard alongside Luka Doncic.

The Mavericks have struggled to put talent around Doncic since his rookie season, and now will pair him with by far the best NBA teammate he has ever had. For the Nets, it feels as if other packages could have certainly rivaled what Dallas offered, but perhaps the Mavericks were the only team truly willing to take on the risk of extending Irving long term.

The Nets have remained adamant that their plan is to still contend, even with Kyrie Irving off the roster, and this trade package does help that some. Getting back former Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie, Brooklyn is familiar with what he provides, and he will likely slide into Irving's starting lineup position.

This was a shocking move for so many that expected Kyrie Irving to end up in Los Angeles, and even more shocking for those who did not anticipate the Mavericks selling themselves on a Kyrie-Luka pairing. There will be a lot to keep an eye on as the rest of the NBA's trade deadline moves shake out.
