Surtain joins a group of 49 players who will try and earn the honor of top defensive back in college football in 2020. The Crimson Tide has had two winners in its illustrious past, Antonio Langham in 1993 and Minkah Fitzpatrick in 2017.
The Plantation, Fla. native has played in 28 games during his two-year Alabama career and recorded 79 total tackles, four forced fumbles, three interceptions, and 15 pass breakups.
He has made 25 consecutive starts in those 28 contests.
With the departures of Xavier McKinney, Trevon Diggs, Shyheim Carter, and Jared Mayden in the Crimson Tide secondary, Surtain will see his role expand into one of the premier players that the team will rely on this upcoming season.
The winner will be announced on Dec. 10 at ESPN's Home Depot College Football Award Show in Atlanta, Ga.
